Art and more
BY SARAH BAKHTIARI
When artist Tom Powers was constructing the specs on an arts festival back in 1971, he didn't expect it to grow to this magnitude or stick around for this long. Today's festival, the 40th Anniversary Powers' Festival, remains strong with 50,000 attendees and still takes place on the same grounds.
Named one of the "Top 20 Events" for September by the Southeast Tourism Society, this festival features country, gospel, folk and contemporary music, including performances by Jason Connelly and Diane Durrett;a juried competition with more than 120 painters, potters and jewelry makers; and demonstrations ofblacksmithing and cornmeal-making at the original Powers' Plantation gristmill.
Stop by for savory country cooking, including prepared-on-the-spot barbecue, vegetable plates, sausage and biscuits, funnel cakes and fried fruit pies.
