Join us for the Learn & Burn at Sandhills WMA West, a one-day, hands-on prescribed fire training designed for landowners, natural resource professionals and beginners interested in learning the basics of safe burning. Participants will take part in a live prescribed burn, gain practical experience using fire tools and learn directly from experienced fire managers.

This introductory-level event is ideal for those with little to no prescribed fire experience. Instruction will cover:

  • Prescribed burn planning and permitting
  • Smoke management and fire weather
  • Liability laws and financial resources
  • Hands-on practice with drip torches and other tools of the trade
  • Opportunities to ask questions and learn from experts

Lunch will be provided on site-Pizza, drinks, and chips provided (vegetarian options available upon request)

What to Expect

  • Active participation in a live prescribed burn
  • Walking on uneven terrain and carrying tools
  • Requirement to wear natural fiber clothing (cotton, wool, linen, silk) and leather boots
  • Bring eye protection, leather gloves, a bandana, sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle

Requirements

  • All participants must sign a hold-harmless liability waiver on the day of the event.
  • This is an outdoor, all-day educational training — come prepared for weather and physical activity.
